Had my first Miata experience tonight. It was a grey mazdaspeed just like this. It was glorious. Fantastic. The perfect car. The answer.

Everything about it was perfect. Other small roadsters (I'm looking at you, solstice GXP) have problems fitting me, but not with the Miata. Fit like a glove.

Oh, just remembered this. You're somewhat better off building your own turbo Miata. Few turbo NB's running around Columbia making between 250-350hp that started life as N/A cars.

Psh i can't afford a mazdaspeed. It'd be an old NB/late NA if i bought one.

Here's a cool idea if you want to try it out. Buy a NA with a blown or missing motor, swap in the NB's VVT engine, and build it up from there. You can easily make over 160hp with a polish, JDM intake manifold, header, exhaust, and tune.
Hit up the Miata FAQ for tips on each gen and what you might need to address with each type.

Yes, Miata is the answer to almost every question imaginable.
However, there is another answer that is equally viable and I impart you to.............impart. S2000. It answers the same questions....with 80+ more Hp.
Much love. :)

Keep the 2002, don't sell it. Well that is assuming it is a well sorted one with no rust and all that jazz. Just one thing, it seems like the Miatas don't hold up well to rust or driving in harsh winter conditions with shit tons of salt on the roads. If you do get a Miata and do winter driving you will end up with rust. But winter is also the best time to buy a miata. So happy hunting and make sure to look up the purchase inspection sheet on Miata.net and read up on what to look for and at when you go to test a Miata out. They are addictive little machines and dead reliable to boot. Don't be afraid of the ones that have over 100k miles on them, and a timing belt going on them just means a tow home.

I'm 6'1'' and ~230 lbs right now and I fit reasonably well when I put my NB on. . .

I drove my first one this past summer...a 91 with manual steering. I COMPLETELY GET IT. Other than the fact that I was purely guessing where the friction point was with the clutch, and that I accidentally shifted 1-2-3-2 (notice that 4 did not come after 3) it was great.

It's an extremely poor-sorted one with an auto covered in rust.

Ok then sell it. Then get an NB. You won't regret it. The 5 sp are a little more fun in my opinion as the 6 sp box ends up having the same overall gearbox ratio with no true overdrive in 6th so you end up shifting a bunch. Also the MSM is nice but for the price of a base NB and a turbo kit you can have more power than the MSM and still wind up paying less than you would for an MSM.
It is worth it if you can handle a car with very little cargo room. There really isn't a whole lot of space to stash stuff in the trunk but it teaches you how to pack efficiently and only pack what you need while still allowing your tool kit to be accessible. Also, the guys on Miata.net are always willing to give advice on potential cars you are looking at if you want to check if the asking price is fair, just be prepared to actually give the details as best you can about the car you are wondering about. Some years are more valuable than others along with the different trims available. Miata prices vary and generally don't follow what the "book" values say. All the information you could ever want about Miatas can be accessed on that site and most the folks are more than happy to help out with advice, whether it is if a car is a good buy or how to take care of the timing belt or alignment settings.
Sorry about spewing out information with out you asking about anything. . . Just get a miata, you won't regret it is basically all I am trying to say. . . And if you find one with a hard top you will have scored.
